How to Read an Offer’s Terms: A Pre-Launch Checklist
Before sending traffic to an offer, read its terms as operating rules, not background information. Confirm the details that affect whether a conversion qualifies, whether your traffic is allowed, and how payment is handled. If a rule is unclear or missing, get clarification in writing before launch.
Payout and conversion rules
- Confirm the payout model and amount. Check whether payment is based on a sale, lead, trial, or another action, and what event triggers it.
- Define a valid conversion. Make sure you understand the required customer action and any conditions, such as completing a form or verifying contact details.
- Check the attribution rules. Find out how the offer assigns a conversion when a visitor clicks more than one promotion or returns later.
- Review duplicate and existing-customer rules. Confirm whether repeat submissions, previous customers, or leads already in the advertiser’s system can qualify.
- Ask how rejected conversions are handled. Identify which reasons can invalidate a lead and whether you can review or dispute a rejection.
- Clarify the payment schedule and hold period. Understand when conversions are reviewed, when approved earnings become payable, and what may delay release.
Traffic sources and targeting
- List every traffic source you plan to use. Confirm that each channel and placement is allowed, since permission for one source does not automatically cover another.
- Check the rules for paid search and branded terms. Find out whether bidding on the advertiser’s name, product names, or related terms is restricted.
- Review email, messaging, and social promotion rules. Verify whether these channels require prior approval or specific disclosure and consent practices.
- Avoid prohibited traffic methods. Look for bans on incentives, misleading claims, automated activity, forced clicks, or other tactics that could make traffic invalid.
- Confirm geographic limits. Check which countries or regions are eligible and whether targeting must exclude locations outside the approved area.
- Verify device and operating-system restrictions. Make sure the offer accepts the devices your campaign will reach and note any platform-specific conditions.
Capacity and tracking
- Check for caps and pacing rules. Confirm whether there is a limit on clicks, leads, or conversions and how quickly the limit may change.
- Ask what happens when a cap is reached. Find out whether traffic must stop immediately or whether later conversions may be rejected.
- Confirm the required tracking setup. Check which links, identifiers, pixels, postbacks, or other tracking methods must be used to record activity.
- Test the tracking path before launch. Verify that clicks and conversion signals can be attributed correctly, because missing data may make valid activity difficult to confirm.
- Review rules for link changes and redirects. Make sure your routing, tracking parameters, and destination behavior comply with the offer’s requirements.
Creative and landing-page rules
- Use only approved claims and creative. Check whether supplied wording, images, or other materials must be used as provided or approved before publication.
- Confirm what your landing page may say. Ensure that its claims, pricing details, disclosures, and presentation do not conflict with the offer or advertiser’s terms.
- Check whether pre-landers or custom pages need approval. Get permission before adding pages, forms, or extra steps that could change the visitor journey.
- Keep disclosures clear and visible. Follow the applicable rules for identifying advertising and explaining any material conditions to visitors.
- Review restrictions on edits and localization. Ask whether translating, cropping, or changing approved creative is allowed before making adjustments.
Confirm before launch
- Save the current offer terms. Keep a dated copy or record of the rules you relied on, since terms may be revised.
- Request written answers to unclear points. Ask through an official program contact or support channel so the response can be reviewed later.
- Get material changes in writing. Confirm updates to payout, traffic permissions, caps, or conversion rules before continuing under different conditions.
- Recheck the terms before scaling or restarting. Offer rules can change, so verify that your traffic and setup remain compliant before increasing activity.
